Before the Dawn – An Artist’s Journey through Afghanistan is a response to the unfolding narrative that artist Arabella Dorman has witnessed over the last five years whilst travelling through Afghanistan, both as an officially embedded artist with the British military and as a solitary traveller.
The exhibition is sponsored by a young Afghan entrepreneur, Mirwais Alizai, founder, CEO and President of international ICT company GTR, who was born in Helmand province and has a deep personal commitment to the prosperity and representation of his country and culture.
Born in the UK, artist Arabella Dorman has gained an international reputation as both a portrait painter and war artist whose work has been acquired by public institutions and private collectors around the world. Her work is a demonstration of classical technique with a contemporary twist, an expression of the modern day, seen and understood through timeless painterly values.
Arabella’s latest exhibition Before the Dawn – An Artist’s Journey through Afghanistan to be held at La Galleria Pall Mall, London, 4–15 Nov 2014, is a body of work inspired by and created during her travels through Afghanistan over the last five years.

Arabella is also working in partnership with Afghanaid and Walking With The Wounded and will use the exhibition as a platform to host a series of fundraising events with guest speakers who will give visitors a deeper insight into Afghanistan and the conflict and to help connect with the experiences shared by Arabella and her subjects.
‘Her pictures are superb. Some bold and forthright in line and stroke, others sedate and still, in shadows. But all are spellbinding’ – The Daily Telegraph
The exhibition will be opened by Rory Stewart MP, and will host numerous guest speakers throughout the fortnight run, including the former Chief of the Defence Staff General The Lord Richards of Herstmonceaux, General Sir Nick Parker and Colonel Stuart Tootal, as well as veteran correspondents Jon Snow and Christina Lamb.
